- The Balboa Amusement Producing Company (also known as Balboa Studios) was a film production company in Long Beach, California, from 1913 to 1918 that produced more than 1000 films, around 90% of which have been lost. Some of the notable silent film stars who worked at the studios during this time are Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. Charlie Chaplin also made three visits to the studios to visit Arbuckle's film shoots and to study studio management for his newly formed United Artists company. (en)

Horkheimer achète le studio en 1913, et dès 1915 sa production dépasse 5 000 m de films par semaine. Fatty Arbuckle, Henry King, Baby Marie Osborne, Thomas Ince, William Desmond Taylor y ont commencé leur carrière. En 1918, Horkheimer se déclare en banqueroute à l'étonnement de l'industrie cinématographique, marquant la fin de Balboa, et la fin de Long Beach comme capitale du cinéma, laissant ainsi la place à Hollywood. La plupart des centaines de films produits par ce studio ont été perdus depuis. « Propriétaires des lieux, les deux frères Horkheimer feront de leur entreprise le plus grand studio indépendant des années dix, peut-être le plus grand studio indépendant qui ait jamais existé aux États-Unis. La sede principale della compagnia, conosciuta anche con il nome Balboa Studios, si trovava a Long Beach, nella Sixth Street e Alamitos Avenue. La casa di produzione spostò i suoi studi per le riprese in esterni in un'area di undici acri (45.000 m²) a Signal Hill (California). Tra le star che lavorarono per lo studio vanno ricordati Fatty Arbuckle e Buster Keaton.
