- An artist's impression, artist's conception, artist's interpretation, or artist's rendition is the representation of an object or a scene created by an artist when no other accurate representation is available. It could be an image, a sound, a video or a model. Artist's impressions are often created to represent concepts and objects that cannot be seen by the naked eye; that are very big, very small, in the past, in the future, fictional, or otherwise abstract. For example, in architecture, artists' impressions are used to showcase the design of planned buildings and associated landscape. Artists' impressions are particularly prominent in space art.

Elle s'oppose, par sa réalisation, à la vue technique du dessin industriel, à une photographie documentaire selon Charles Mendel en 1905, ou à toute vue contractuelle. Le terme artiste traduit ici le fait que c'est un rendu « humain », par opposition au rendu « mécanique » d'une photographie, et qu'il contient donc une part d'incertitude. L'aspect purement artistique, s'il peut être présent, est cependant en retrait par rapport à l'aspect documentaire. (fr)
- Een artist's impression of artistieke impressie is een afbeelding, filmpje of model om een object of situatie af te beelden waarvan geen fotografische afbeelding bestaat, bijvoorbeeld voor toekomstige gebeurtenissen of situaties. Met het werk maakt een vormgever/kunstenaar inzichtelijk hoe iets eruit kan hebben gezien of eruit zal komen te zien. Door de visueel realistische voorstelling kan het publiek een betere indruk krijgen van het onderwerp. In wetenschap en techniek wordt de term gebruikt om een grafische voorstelling aan te duiden van een constructie die nog niet vervaardigd is of van een verschijnsel dat nog niet waargenomen is of niet visueel waargenomen kan worden. Bij kunstwerken uit de civiele techniek of de bouwkunde spreekt men vaak van een architectural rendering. Ook in de artistieke kunst wordt er gesproken van artist's impression. (nl)
