- Arago hotspot is a hotspot in the Pacific Ocean, presently located below the Arago seamount close to the island of Rurutu, French Polynesia. Arago is part of a family of hotspots in the southern Pacific, which include the Society hotspot and the Macdonald hotspot among others. These are structures beneath Earth's crust which generate volcanoes and which are in part formed by mantle plumes, although Arago itself might have a shallower origin. As the Pacific plate moves over the hotspots, new volcanoes form and old volcanoes are carried away; sometimes an older volcano is carried over the hotspot and is then uplifted as happened with Rurutu. The Arago hotspot is responsible for the formation of Arago seamount and uplift on Rurutu; however reconstructions of the past positions of tectonic plates and geochemistry suggest that other islands and seamounts were constructed by the Arago hotspot during the past 120 million years. These potentially include Tuvalu, Gilbert Islands, the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands as well as part of the Austral Islands and Cook Islands. (en)

Arago fait partie d'un groupe de points chauds du Pacifique Sud, comprenant notamment celui de la Société et celui de Macdonald. Les points chauds sont des structures situées sous la croûte terrestre qui génèrent des volcans et qui sont en partie formées par des panaches provenant du manteau terrestre, bien qu'Arago puisse avoir une origine moins profonde. La plaque du Pacifique se déplaçant au-dessus des points chauds, de nouveaux volcans se forment et de vieux volcans disparaissent. Parfois, un volcan plus ancien est réactivé par le passage d'un nouveau point chaud, comme ce fut le cas avec Rurutu. Arago est responsable de la formation du et de la surélévation de Rurutu. Cependant, les reconstitutions des positions passées des plaques tectoniques et la géochimie suggèrent que d'autres îles et monts sous-marins ont été produits par Arago au cours des 120 derniers millions d'années. Si tratta di strutture al disotto della crosta terrestre che danno origine a vulcani e che sono in parte formati da pennacchi del mantello, anche se l'Arago sembra avere un'origine meno profonda. Con il movimento della placca pacifica al di sopra dei punti caldi, si formano nuovi vulcani mentre quelli vecchi vengono eliminati. In qualche caso un vecchio vulcano capita al di sopra del punto caldo e può venire sollevato, come è accaduto con l'isola Rurutu. Il punto caldo di Arago è responsabile della formazione dell'Arago Seamount e del sollevamento di Rurutu; tuttavia le ricostruzioni delle antiche posizioni tettoniche e la geochimica suggeriscono che altre isole e montagne sottomarine sono state formate dall'Arago nel corso dei precedenti 120 milioni di anni. Le isole includono Tuvalu, Kiribati, il gruppo delle Isole Ratak nell'arcipelago delle Isole Marshall, come pure le Isole Australi e le Isole Cook. (it)
