- Η Άφιδνα ή στον πληθυντικό: οι Αφίδναι ή οι Αφίδνες ή οι Άφιδναι (αρχαία ελληνικά: Ἄφιδνα ή Ἀφίδναι), (ο δήμος: Αφιδνών), ήταν αρχαίος οικισμός - πόλη και δήμος της Αιαντίδας (περιοχή της Αρχαίας Αττικής και φυλή της αρχαίας Αθήνας). Ο Στράβων, αναφερόμενος στον ιστορικό Φιλόχορο και το έργο του «Ατθίς» (ή Ατθίδες ή Ιστορίαι) λέει ότι η Άφιδνα ήταν μια από τις δώδεκα πόλεις, οι οποίες ιδρύθηκαν στην Αττική από τον μυθικό βασιλιά της Αθήνας, Κέκροπα και αργότερα ο Θησέας την ένωσε με την πόλη της αρχαίας Αθήνας. Στη συνέχεια έγινε ένας από τους δήμους της Αττικής (δήμος Αφιδνών) και ανήκε αρχικά στην Αιαντίδα φυλή. (el)
- Aphidna (Ancient Greek: Ἄφιδνα) or Aphidnae or Aphidnai (Ἀφίδναι) was one of the twelve ancient towns of ancient Attica. It was celebrated in the mythical period as the place where Theseus deposited Helen of Troy, entrusting her to the care of his friend . When the Dioscuri invaded Attica in search of their sister, the inhabitants of Deceleia informed the Lacedaemonians where Helen was concealed, and showed them the way to Aphidna. The Dioscuri thereupon took the town, and carried off their sister. We learn, from a decree quoted by Demosthenes, that Aphidna was, in his time, a fortified town, and at a greater distance than 120 stadia from Athens. As an Attic deme, it belonged in succession to the tribes Aeantis, Leontis, , and . The site of Aphidna is located at near the modern town of Afidnes. (en)

Reste der sogenannten Burg des Theseus wurden auf dem 366 Meter hohen Kotroni-Hügel, der heute drei Kilometer südlich von Kapandriti liegt, ausgegraben. Von hier kann man die gesamte Ebene überblicken. Einen Kilometer südlich befindet sich der Marathon-See und sechs Kilometer in nordwestlicher Richtung der Ort – das moderne Aphidnai. (de)

Город располагался в 3 часах пути к востоку от Декелеи близ современных городов Афидне и Капандритион. Страбон, ссылаясь на Филохора, сообщает, что Афидна была одним из 12 городов Аттики, основанных мифическим царём Аттики Кекропсом. По преданию, Афидны были взяты Кастором и Полидевком, сыновьями спартанского царя Тиндарея, называемыми Тиндаридами, узнавшими, что в этом укрепленном городе Тесей спрятал их сестру Елену. Елену и свою мать Эфру Тесей передал на попечение своему другу Афидну, мифическому царю и герою-эпониму Афидн. Доисторический акрополь древних Афидн сегодня отождествляют с холмом Котрони (365 м) на северном берегу озера Маратон, расположенным между поселениями Капандритион и Афидне. Холм Котрони вызывал интерес историков как минимум с начала XIX века. Англичанин Джордж Финлей пытался установить Котрони как древнюю Афидну, в основном используя топографический анализ и фрагментарные надписи. Он также сообщил об остатках средневековых укреплений, более поздних домах и церквях, древних кварталах и руинах чифликов, особенных османских уделов. В 1887—1888 году были обнаружены руины доисторической эпохи, что привело к частичным раскопкам. Раскопки в 1894 году производил археолог из Уппсальского университета , сотрудничавший с .
