- An airbox is an empty chamber on the inlet of most combustion engines. It collects air from outside and feeds it to the intake hoses of each cylinder. Older engines drew air directly from the surroundings into each individual carburetor. Modern engines instead draw air into an airbox, which is connected by individual hoses to each carburetor or directly to the intake ports in fuel-injected engines, thus avoiding an extra intake manifold. The airbox allows the use of one air filter instead of multiples, reducing complexity. Developments arising from concerns about engine emissions during the late 1970s allow the airbox to collect pump gases from the crankcase and the tank air vent and re-feed them to the engine. (en)

* Yamaha: Fresh Air Intake System (FAIS)
* Kawasaki: Ram Air Intake System (RAIS) Het is ook toegepast in sommige auto's, onder meer in de BMW M3 CSL. Doordat de rijwind met kracht via stuwdrukinlaten in de airbox wordt geperst, ontstaat bij hogere snelheid een overdruk, waardoor meer lucht (en daarmee zuurstof en benzine) in de cilinders van de motor wordt geperst met als gevolg een toename van het motorvermogen. - La scatola dell'aria, la scatola filtro o air-box è un contenitore con funzione di gestione dell'aria in ingresso al sistema d'alimentazione, all'interno normalmente contiene il filtro dell'aria, in pratica serve a gestire e regolare il flusso d'aria per la miscela "aria/carburante" poi diretta al motore. Spesso nei motori usati in competizioni sportive, al fine di raggiungere ottimizzazioni di rendimento a scapito della durata stessa degli organi meccanici, la scatola dell'aria non contiene filtri ed è conformata per ottimizzare la velocità d'approvvigionamento dell'aria richiesta dalla combustione del motore.
