- التهاب القرنية الشوكميبي (بالإنجليزية: Acanthamoeba keratitis) هو أحد الأمراض النادرة، تغزو فيه الأميبا قرنية العين وتصيب 19 أشخاص من كل 100000 شخص، والأميبا هي إحدى الأوليات المنتشرة بكثرة، توجد في المياه والتربة ويمكن أن تصيب الجلد والعين والجهاز العصبي المركزي. يصعب علاج التهاب القرنية الشوكميبي بالعلاجات التقليدية وقد تؤدي إلى العمى بسبب إصابة القرنية أو التركيبات الأخرى اللازمة للإبصار. يعد التهاب القرنية الشوكميبي أحد الأمراض النادرة، وقد تم تمويل أحد المشاريع ليقوم بإجراء اختبارات لقياس فعالية العقاقير والمضادات الحيوية المختلفة في علاجه. - Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare disease in which amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba invade the clear portion of the front (cornea) of the eye. It affects roughly 100 people in the United States each year. Acanthamoeba are protozoa found nearly ubiquitously in soil and water and can cause infections of the skin, eyes, and central nervous system. Infection of the cornea by Acanthamoeba is difficult to treat with conventional medications, and AK may cause permanent visual impairment or blindness, due to damage to the cornea or through damage to other structures important to vision. Recently, AK has been recognized as an orphan disease and a funded project, orphan diseases Acanthamoeba keratitis (ODAK), has tested the effects of a diverse range drugs and biocides on AK. (en)
- La queratitis por Acanthamoeba es una enfermedad producida por la invasión de la córnea por amebas del género Acanthamoeba. Como consecuencia se produce una inflamación de la córnea (queratitis) que puede originar déficit de la capacidad visual. La infección se ve favorecida por diferentes circunstancias, como la exposición a agua contaminada a temperatura templada, los traumatismos sobre la córnea o los cuerpos extraños en el ojo. Sin embargo el factor más frecuentemente implicado es la utilización de lentes de contacto que actúan como fuente de infección, sobre todo si no se desinfectan adecuadamente ni con la frecuencia recomendada, o se utilizan en piscinas durante el baño.
