| - Saint Abel of Reims (died 5 August 764) was abbot of Lobbes and Bishop of Reims.
Of Scottish origins, Abel travelled with other Christian teachers like Boniface and Willibrord to Franconia. He appears to have first had office in the abbey of Lobbes. On 3 March 744 he became bishop of Reims at the Synod of Soissons.
Despite support from king Carloman, Abel was not in the favour of Pope Zachary. The pope refused to hand the pallium to Abel and gave it to archbishop Hartbert of Sens instead. Thus Abel could not stand his ground and retired (probably in 748) to Lobbes Abbey, where he continued to spread the word until his death in 764. He was buried at Binche on August 5, 1409. (en)

Aus Schottland gebürtig, kam Abel mit Bonifatius, Willibrord und anderen christlichen Lehrern in das Frankenreich. Er scheint zuerst in der Abtei Lobbes im Hennegau gewirkt zu haben und wurde, als auf Betreiben von Bonifatius die Synode von Soissons (3. März 744) den Bischof Milo von Reims absetzte, zum Bischof von Reims erhoben. Papst Zacharias war trotz der Empfehlungen von König Karlmann und seinem mächtigen Hausmeier Pippin dem Jüngeren nicht bereit, Abel das Pallium zu erteilen, das er statt dessen dem Bischof Hartbert von Sens gab. Abel konnte sich daher in Reims nicht behaupten. Er zog sich (wahrscheinlich schon 745) in die Abtei Lobbes zurück, widmete sich dort der Mission im Hennegau, in Flandern und im Lütticher Land, und starb in Lobbes am 5. August 764.

D'origine écossaise ou irlandaise, il était moine au monastère de Lobbes en Belgique. Il fut choisi par le maire du palais Pépin le Bref pour remplacer Milon de Trèves, qui avait cumulé de nombreuses charges ecclésiastiques. Incapable de se maintenir à la tête de son diocèse et confronté aux entreprises de Milon, il abandonna sa charge au bout de trois ans et se retira dans son monastère. Il mourut entre 764 et 770.

Św. Abel pochodził ze Szkocji. Podróżował razem ze świętym Bonifacym i świętym Willibordem. Został mnichem w Lobbes, opactwie położonym na terenie współczesnej Belgii. W 743 dzięki wstawiennictwu św. Bonifacego i za poparciem Pepina Krótkiego został arcybiskupem Reims, nigdy jednak nie zdołał objąć rządów w diecezji. W 744 jego prawa potwierdził synod w Soisson, przeciwstawiał się im jednak sam pragnący objąć arcybiskupstwo duchowny Milon z Trewiru. Św. Abel nie zdołał uzyskać poparcia papieża Zachariasza, który wręczył paliusz Hartbertowi z Sens.
Św. Abel zmarł jako współopat Loches. Jego relikwie w 1409 przeniesiono z Lobbes do Binche, gdzie otoczony jest szczególnym kultem. Święto przypada 5 sierpnia (pl)
