- The Abbot Ice Shelf is an ice shelf 250 mi (400 km) long and 40 mi (60 km) wide, bordering Eights Coast from Cape Waite to Pfrogner Point in Antarctica. Thurston Island lies along the northern edge of the western half of this ice shelf; other sizable islands (Sherman, , Dustin, Johnson, McNamara, Farwell and Dendtler) lie partly or wholly within this shelf. The ice shelf was sighted by members of the U.S. Antarctic Service in flights from the ship Bear, in February 1940, and its western portion was delineated from air photos taken by U.S. Navy (USN) Operation HIGHJUMP, 1946–47. The full extent was mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey from USN air photos of 1966. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Rear Admiral James Lloyd Abbot, Jr., Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Support Force, Antarctica, February 1967 to June 1969. (en)

Andere Inseln entsprechender Größe wie die Sherman-Insel, die Carpenter-Insel, die Dustin-Insel, die Johnson-Insel, die McNamara-Insel, die Farwell-Insel und die Dendtler-Insel werden vom teilweise bzw. gänzlich von der Eisfläche umschlossen. Teilnehmer der United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) sichteten das Schelfeis bei Überflügen im Jahr 1940; der Westteil wurde mithilfe von Luftaufnahmen der United States Navy in den Jahren 1946 und 1947 umrissen. Schließlich gelang es dem United States Geological Survey anhand von Luftaufnahmen aus dem Jahr 1966, die Gesamtausdehnung des Schelfeises kartografisch zu erfassen. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte es nach Konteradmiral James Lloyd Abbot Jr. (1918–2012), Kommandant der US-Marineunterstützungseinheiten in Antarktika von Februar 1967 bis Juni 1969.
