- The 2022 German Masters (officially the 2022 BildBet German Masters) was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place from 26 to 30 January 2022 at the Tempodrom in Berlin, Germany. The tournament was the ninth ranking event of the 2021–22 snooker season and the 16th edition of the German Masters, first held in 1995 as the German Open. The fifth of eight tournaments in the European Series, it was the first professional snooker tournament held outside the United Kingdom in almost two years, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Judd Trump was the defending champion, having defeated Jack Lisowski 9–2 in the 2021 final. However, Trump lost 1–5 in the quarter-finals to Zhao Xintong, who went on to meet Yan Bingtao in the final. Aged 24 and 21 respectively, Zhao and Yan had the youngest combined age of any two ranking finalists since Neil Robertson played Jamie Cope at the 2006 Grand Prix. It was the second time that two players from mainland China contested a ranking final; the previous occasion was the 2013 Shanghai Masters final between Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong. Zhao whitewashed Yan 9–0 in the final to win the second ranking title of his career. He became the third player in professional snooker history, after Steve Davis at the 1989 Grand Prix and Robertson at the January 2020 European Masters, to win a two-session ranking final without conceding a frame. Masters seit 2011 und mit Ausnahme des Vorjahrs, wo wegen COVID-19 fast alle Turniere im englischen Milton Keynes ausgetragen wurden, war das Tempodrom der Austragungsort in der deutschen Hauptstadt. Es war das erste Turnier, das nach Lockerung der Pandemiemaßnahmen außerhalb von Großbritannien stattfand. Dem Thailänder Thepchaiya Un-Nooh gelang in seinem Auftaktmatch in der Qualifikation ein Maximum Break. Für ihn selbst war es das dritte 147-Punkte-Break und in der Geschichte des German Masters war es das 10. „perfekte Break“. Zuletzt hatte Judd Trump das German Masters zweimal in Folge gewonnen. 2022 schied er aber im Viertelfinale gegen Zhao Xintong aus, der schließlich das Finale erreichte, wo er auf Yan Bingtao traf. Es war das zweite Mal nach dem Shanghai Masters 2013, dass zwei Spieler aus der Volksrepublik China das Endspiel eines Profiturniers bestritten. Zhao e Yan non si sfidavano in uno scontro diretto dagli ottavi di finale del Northern Ireland Open 2020, in cui a trionfare era stato il cinese di Zibo per 4-3. L'ultimo successo del cinese di Xi'an risaliva, invece, ai sedicesimi di finale dell'edizione di febbraio 2020 del World Grand Prix. Si tratta, inoltre, della prima finale giocata tra i due, la prima interamente cinese da quella dello , vinta da Ding Junhui su Xiao Guodong. L'ultimo cappotto in una finale di un torneo professionistico risaliva al Gibraltar Open 2021 (Judd Trump 4-0 Jack Lisowski), mentre l'ultimo 9-0 era stato messo a referto per l'ultima volta in occasione dell'edizione di gennaio 2020 dello European Masters (Neil Robertson su Zhou Yuelong).
