The 2018 Sabah state election took place on 9 May 2018 in concurrence with the 14th Malaysian general election. This election was to elect 60 members of the 15th Sabah State Legislative Assembly. The previous Assembly was dissolved on 7 April 2018. Barisan Nasional (BN), with the most seats, would be able to form a minority government alone. But BN and Homeland Solidarity Party (STAR) decided to form a group of 31 seats, which would allow them to form a coalition government. Musa Aman reinstalled as Chief Minister on 10 May 2018.

Governor Juhar Mahiruddin installed Mohd. Shafie Apdal as the 15th Chief Minister on 12 May 2018. Fueron las decimoterceras elecciones desde la incorporación de Sabah a Malasia en 1964. El Partido del Patrimonio de Sabah (WARISAN) que a su vez mantenía un pacto electoral con la coalición nacional Pakatan Harapan (Pacto de Esperanza o PH) fue el bloque más votado con un 47.16% de los sufragios, con Shafie Apdal como candidato al ejecutivo estatal. El oficialista Barisan Nasional (Frente Nacional) liderado por el Ministro Principal incumbente Musa Aman quedó en segundo lugar con el 42.04%, y la Alianza Unida de Sabah (USA), una agrupación de partidos estatales, quedó en tercer lugar con el 7.18%. Las demás fuerzas no superaron el 2% de los votos. En cuanto al reparto de escaños, se dio un empate técnico entre el bloque PH/WARISAN y el BN, con 29 escaños para ambos, quedando el Partido Solidario de la Patria (STAR), de , con los 2 escaños restantes. Ante esta situación, el partido que recibiese el apoyo de los diputados del STAR accedería al gobierno. Estos declararon su apoyo al Barisan Nasional, garantizando un cuarto mandato a Musa Aman. Sin embargo, la crisis inmediata provocada por la derrota del BN a nivel federal provocó una serie de deserciones y disputas políticas post-electorales que bloquearon la juramentación. Finalmente, en la Asamblea Legislativa Estatal de Sabah se dieron las suficientes deserciones del Barisan Nasional al WARISAN para lograr que Shafie Apdal fuese electo Ministro Principal, con el apoyo de 41 diputados, tomando juramento el 12 de mayo, tan solo tres días después de realizada la elección.​ (es)
