- The 39th Ryder Cup was held September 28–30, 2012, in the United States at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago. This was the first time that the Ryder Cup was held in Illinois. Europe went into the competition as the cup holders, having won in 2010 to regain it. The team captains were Davis Love III for the U.S. and José María Olazábal for Europe. At the start of the final day's play, the U.S. led 10–6 and required 41⁄2 points to win; Europe required 8 points to retain the cup and 81⁄2 to win it outright. Europe achieved one of the greatest comebacks in Ryder Cup history by winning eight and tying one of the 12 singles matches. Martin Kaymer's five-foot putt on the 18th hole to defeat Steve Stricker took the score to 14–13, allowing Europe to retain the cup with one match still in progress. Tiger Woods missed a putt on the final green and conceded the hole to Francesco Molinari, halving the final point and securing outright victory for the European team, 141⁄2–131⁄2. It was named by European media covering the event as the "Miracle at Medinah", and is widely regarded as one of the best sporting comebacks of all time and the greatest in Ryder Cup history. The victory was Europe's second consecutive and fifth in the last six contests. European captain Olazábal dedicated the victory to his countryman Seve Ballesteros. The five-time major champion, who had scored 221⁄2 points in 37 matches and been part of four victorious European sides before captaining them to victory on home soil at Valderrama in 1997, had died of brain cancer in May 2011 at the age of 54, and in his memory, Team Europe wore navy blue and white garments – his traditional Sunday colors – on the final day. Esta Ryder Cup tuvo un desenlace sorpresivo tras la situación vivida los dos primeros días de competición, donde el equipo estadounidense dominó avasalladoramente al europeo, con un 10-4 el sábado por la noche a falta de dos partidos por parejas de . La agónica victoria europea conseguida en estos dos últimos partidos, colocó el marcador general en 10-6 donde Ian Poulter tuvo una trascendental actuación. De hecho, los partidos individuales del domingo serían por tanto claves para una posible remontada europea, pues debían conseguir 8 puntos de los 12 posibles para al menos retener la copa por ser poseedores del trofeo. Esa última jornada fue histórica ya que los jugadores del viejo continente consiguieron ganar ocho partidos, perdiendo tres y empatando el último entre Tiger Woods y Francesco Molinari. El marcador final fue de 14½ a 13½ a favor del combinado europeo. El espíritu y la memoria de Severiano Ballesteros estuvieron presentes durante todo el evento, en los discursos oficiales, en los gritos de "Seve, Seve" de los aficionados europeos asistentes, en los mensajes de humo en el cielo diseñados por avionetas o en el logo oficial de Ballesteros tanto en las bolsas de palos como en la indumentaria de los jugadores europeos el domingo de la remontada. I capitani delle due squadre erano Davis Love III per gli Stati Uniti d'America e José María Olazábal per l'Europa.Le prime due giornate di competizione si sono concluse con un netto predominio della squadra americana, in vantaggio per 10-6, a cui servivano solo 4½ punti per vincere. La squadra europea avrebbe dovuto invece aggiudicarsi almeno 8 singoli su 12 per pareggiare e quindi mantenere la coppa. Durante l'ultima giornata di gara, l'Europa ha realizzato forse la più grande rimonta nella storia della Ryder Cup, vincendo 8 singoli e pareggiandone 1. Il putt di Martin Kaymer alla 18ª buca ha garantito il pareggio dell'Europa portandosi sul 14-13, con un solo match da finire. Il pareggio finale tra Tiger Woods e Francesco Molinari, ha consentito alla squadra europea di vincere (e non pareggiare) la competizione, con il risultato finale di 14½–13½. De Europeanen waren na de tweede dag met een 6–10 achterstand aan de laatste dag begonnen, wat de comeback meteen een van de grootste maakt in de geschiedenis van de Ryder Cup.
