Der bisherige Amtsinhaber, Kurt Waldheim, hatte keine zweite Amtsperiode angestrebt, obwohl die Verfassung dies erlaubt hätte. Kein Kandidat konnte im ersten Wahlgang die erforderliche absolute Mehrheit erreichen. Den ersten Platz belegte Rudolf Streicher (SPÖ) vor Thomas Klestil (ÖVP). Die Stichwahl am 24. - Presidential elections were held in Austria on 26 April 1992, with a second round held on 24 May 1992 after no candidate won a majority in the first round. Incumbent president Kurt Waldheim did not seek reelection as he had not gained acceptance in the international community. The strongest party at that time, the Social Democratic Party, proposed the current minister of traffic and nationalized industries, Rudolf Streicher, for the office, while the Austrian People's Party put up career diplomat Thomas Klestil. Streicher won the first ballot by a small margin, but did not obtain the necessary majority of votes to avoid a second round. However, with the candidates of the smaller parties out in the second ballot, and after a recommendation by Jörg Haider to vote for Klestil, the latter won the second round by an unexpectedly wide margin. - La elección presidencial de Austria en 1992, la novena elección popular de un jefe de Estado austriaco, tuvo lugar el 26 de abril de 1992 el titular Kurt Waldheim no buscó la reelección, ya que no obtuvo aceptación en la comunidad internacional, aunque la Constitución lo hubiera permitido. El partido más fuerte de la época, el Partido Socialdemócrata, propuso el actual ministro de tráfico y industrias nacionalizadas, Rudolf Streicher para estas elecciones. Mientras que el Partido Popular de Austria presentó el diplomático de carrera Thomas Klestil. Streicher ganó la primera vuelta por un pequeño margen, pero no obtuvo la mayoría necesaria de votos para evitar una segunda vuelta. - Wybory prezydenckie w Austrii w 1992 roku zostały przeprowadzone 26 kwietnia i 24 maja 1992. W ich wyniku Austriacy wybrali nowego prezydenta na okres sześcioletniej kadencji. Urzędujący od 1986 prezydent Kurt Waldheim nie ubiegał się o reelekcję. W wyborach wystartowało czworo kandydatów. Austriacka Partia Ludowa wystawiła bezpartyjnego dyplomatę Thomasa Klestila. Przedstawicielem Socjaldemokratycznej Partii Austrii został minister Rudolf Streicher. Wiceprzewodnicząca Rady Narodowej Heide Schmidt reprezentowała Wolnościową Partię Austrii, zaś publicysta Robert Jungk kandydował z ramienia Zielonych. Pierwsza tura zakończyła się zwycięstwem przedstawiciela socjaldemokratów, w drugiej wyraźną przewagę uzyskał jednak Thomas Klestil, wygrywając tym samym wybory. (pl)
