- The 1976 ABA All Star Game was the ninth and final American Basketball Association All-Star Game, played at McNichols Arena in Denver, Colorado on January 27, 1976. This time, the league abandoned the usual East vs. West format it used from the 1967-68 season onward and instead had the league's first place team at the All Star break face off against a team of ABA All Stars. At the All Star break the Denver Nuggets were in first place, which was convenient as the Nuggets had also been selected to host the game in McNichols Arena. Kevin Loughery of the New York Nets coached the All-Stars while Larry Brown led the Denver Nuggets. This was the second year in a row that Loughery and Brown coached against each other in the ABA All-Star Game. (The Nuggets went on to finish the regular season in first place at 60-24 (.714), but after beating the Kentucky Colonels 4 games to 3 in the ABA Semifinals the Nuggets lost in the 1976 ABA Finals to the New York Nets, 4 games to 2.) Pre-game entertainment was provided by Glen Campbell and Charlie Rich. Halftime of the All Star Game saw the first-ever Slam Dunk Contest, which was won by Julius Erving of the New York Nets (who took off from the free throw line for one of his dunks) over David Thompson of the Denver Nuggets, Artis Gilmore of the Kentucky Colonels, George Gervin of the San Antonio Spurs and Larry Kenon of the Spurs. The NBA later adopted the Slam Dunk Contest as part of its All Star Game starting in 1984 (also hosted by the Denver Nuggets). Denver's 52 fourth quarter points was a record for an ABA All Star Game and capped a ferocious comeback win. David Thompson of the Denver Nuggets was named MVP. This was the final ABA All Star Game, due to the ABA-NBA merger in June 1976. (en)

Por primera vez se cambió el formato de enfrentamiento entre dos selecciones de ambas conferencias, pasando a jugarse entre el equipo que en ese momento de la temporada tenía mejor balance de victorias y una selección del resto de equipos de la liga. Los Denver Nuggets, dirigidos por Larry Brown, fueron los elegidos para enfrentarse al ABA All-Stars, con Kevin Loughery, el entrenador de los New York Nets en el banquillo. La victoria correspondió al equipo de Denver, por 144-138, siendo elegido MVP del All-Star Game de la ABA el base de los Nuggets David Thompson, que consiguió 29 puntos y 8 rebotes. El partido fue seguido en directo por 17.798 espectadores. En el descanso se organizó, por vez primera en este tipo de eventos, un concurso de mates, en el que participaron cinco jugadores: Artis Gilmore, George Gervin, Larry Kenon, David Thompson y Julius Erving, correspondiendo la victoria a este último. El partido se prolongó más allá de la medianoche, debido a que los organizadores, además del concurso de mates, programaron previamente un concierto de dos horas de duración a cargo de Glen Campbell y Charlie Rich, ya que no confiaban en llenar el pabellón. La Lega decise di abbandonare il tradizionale confronto tra Eastern Division e Western Division, e di far giocare una partita tra la miglior squadra in termine di vittorie/sconfitte e una selezione di stelle. La vittoria finale fu quindi a vantaggio dei Denver Nuggets sulla ABA All-Star per 144 a 138. David Thompson, dei Denver Nuggets, fu nominato MVP della partita. Nell'intervallo dell'incontro andò in scena per la prima volta nella storia della pallacanestro, uno spettacolo di contorno: una gara di schiacciate, che vide la vittoria di Julius "Doctor J" Erving dei New York Nets. Так как чемпионат в сезоне 1975/1976 годов проходил в одном дивизионе, формат проведения матча всех звёзд пришлось изменить. Команда «Денвер Наггетс» под руководством Ларри Брауна в упорной борьбе обыграла сборную всех звёзд АБА Кевина Логери, который стоял у руля клуба «Нью-Йорк Нетс», со счётом 144:138.
