- The 1968 Rugby League World Cup tournament was the fourth staging of the Rugby League World Cup, and was held in Australia and New Zealand during May and June in 1968. Contested by the men's national rugby league football teams of the two host countries plus Great Britain and France, for the first time a final to determine the World Cup was specifically pre-arranged (previous finals having only been used when teams finished level on points). Financially it was a profitable venture for the competing nations. The 1968 World Cup was the first to be played under limited tackles rules, the number then being four tackles. The round 1 match between Great Britain and Australia attracted an attendance of 62,256, the highest for a World Cup match until 1992. The final was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground; a crowd of 54,290 watched Australia defeat France. The stars of the Australian team in the tournament were skipper Johnny Raper, second-rower Ron Coote, who scored spectacular tries in each and every game, and the dead-shot kicker Eric Simms, who harvested a record 25 goals (50 points). - La 4e édition de la Coupe du monde de rugby à XIII se déroule du 25 mai au 10 juin 1968 en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande huit ans après la précédente édition de 1960. Il s'agit de la plus importante des compétitions internationales de rugby à XIII mettant aux prises des sélections nationales, organisée par Rugby League International Federation (RLIF). L'Australie est invaincue dans ce tournoi et remporte son deuxième titre après celui de 1957 en battant la France 20 à 2 en finale. Cette dernière bat en première phase la Nouvelle-Zélande et la Grande-Bretagne. Le match entre l'Australie et la Grande-Bretagne constitue la meilleure affluence sur une rencontre de Coupe du monde avec 62 256 spectateurs jusqu'en 1992. L'édition est marquée par un succès populaire avec une affluence cumulée de 220 681 spectateurs soit une moyenne de 31 526 spectateurs par match. A Austrália, que tradicionalmente é a seleção de rugby league mais forte do mundo, foi campeã pela segunda vez. O torneio estava previsto para 1965, mas acabou adiado em virtude do declínio do rugby league francês (que teve na Copa de 1968 seu último grande momento, sendo vice-campeão) e do fracasso da inclusão da África do Sul, que ensaiava aderir à competição. Desta forma, como nas edições anteriores, a edição só contou com quatro seleções participantes, em virtude da pequena difusão global em alto nível da modalidade: a anfitriã e campeã Austrália, França, Grã-Bretanha e Nova Zelândia.
