- The 1955–56 Panhellenic Championship was the 20th season of the highest football league of Greece and an exceptionally interesting championship, since 5 out of the 6 teams were challenging for the title until the final fixture, while Aris was left behind from the beginning. In the end Olympiacos won their 12th championship (3 consecutive) although he started with 4 consecutive draws. Before the final stage , in that year, they were two qualification stages. Initially from the groups of the "founding" associations the results were as follows:
* Athenian Championship: The first 3 teams of the ranking.
* Piraeus' Championship: The first 2 teams of the ranking.
* Macedonian Championship: The first 2 teams of the ranking. Subsequently, 3 new groups were created with geographical criteria where a total of 14 teams participated. The 7 came from the 3 founding associations and the other 7 came from the winners of the regional championships of the same number. Finally, the teams that participated in the final phase of the championship resulted as follows:
* Northern Group: The first 2 teams of the ranking.
* Central Group: The first 2 teams of the ranking.
* Southern Group: The first 2 teams of the ranking. The point system was: Win: 3 points - Draw: 2 points - Loss: 1 point. (en)
- Το Πανελλήνιο πρωτάθλημα 1955–56 υπήρξε μία εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα διοργάνωση, καθώς από τις 6 ομάδες που μετείχαν, οι 5 διεκδίκησαν ως το φινάλε τον τίτλο του πρωταθλητή. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι ο πρωταθλητής με τον 5ο της κατάταξης είχαν μόλις 3 βαθμούς διαφορά, ενώ μόνο ο Άρης έμεινε από το ξεκίνημα πίσω στη βαθμολογία. Τελικά τον τίτλο κατέκτησε ο Ολυμπιακός, παρά το γεγονός ότι ξεκίνησε με 4 διαδοχικές ισοπαλίες, για 3η συνεχόμενη φορά και 12η συνολικά. Πριν την τελική φάση, η οποία και αποτέλεσε την οριστική μορφή του πρωταθλήματος εκείνης της χρονιάς, υπήρξαν δύο προκριματικές φάσεις. Αρχικά, από τα πρωταθλήματα των τριών «ιδρύτριων» ενώσεων, την πρόκριση για την επόμενη φάση κατέκτησαν:
* Πρωτάθλημα ΕΠΣ Αθηνών: Οι 3 πρώτες ομάδες της κατάταξης
* Πρωτάθλημα ΕΠΣ Πειραιώς: Οι 2 πρώτες ομάδες της κατάταξης
* Πρωτάθλημα ΕΠΣ Μακεδονίας: Οι 2 πρώτες ομάδες της κατάταξης Στη συνέχεια, δημιουργήθηκαν τρεις νέοι όμιλοι με γεωγραφικά κριτήρια όπου μετείχαν συνολικά 14 ομάδες. Οι 7 από τις τρεις ιδρύτριες ενώσεις και άλλες 7 από τα πρωταθλήματα των ισάριθμων ενώσεων Α΄ κατηγορίας. Από κάθε όμιλο προκρίθηκαν στην τελική φάση οι δύο πρώτες ομάδες της κατάταξης, οι οποίες τελικά ήταν 2 της Αθήνας, 2 του Πειραιά και 2 της Θεσσαλονίκης. Το σύστημα αυτό (δύο προκριματικές φάσεις αντί μίας) δεν επαναλήφθηκε τα επόμενα χρόνια μέχρι την καθιέρωση της Α' εθνικής. Το σύστημα βαθμολογίας ήταν: Νίκη: 3 βαθμοί - Ισοπαλία: 2 βαθμοί - Ήττα: 1 βαθμός (el)
