The hardened endocarp which constitutes the pyrene provides a protective physical barrier around the seed, shielding it from pathogens and herbivory. Caroço é um termo popular ligado, de maneira geral, à semente de um fruto, ou ao endocarpo lenhoso de algumas frutas, como pêssegos, amêndoas e ameixas. Existem metáforas enfatizando ao conceito do caroço como algo impalatável no alimento (ou algo desagradável em meio a algo prazeroso) que são comuns no Brasil.
