- Der Ausdruck Grabenarbeit (auch: Grabenkunst) bezeichnet ein umgearbeitetes und zweckentfremdetes Munitionsteil. Vor allem in den Stellungs- und Grabenkämpfen des Ersten Weltkrieges nutzten viele Soldaten Wartezeiten, um aus Munitionsresten Andenken für Angehörige in der Heimat oder Nutzartikel herzustellen. Diese Militaria sind heute begehrte Sammlerstücke. Zumeist wurden Geschosshülsen mit Kalibern ab 40 mm und Kartuschen mit Durchmessern bis zu 150 mm zu Ringen, Armreifen, Anhängern, Schnapsgläsern, Feuerzeugen, Aschenbechern, Zigarettendosen, Kerzenhaltern oder auch Vasen umgearbeitet. Häufig wurden auch Granatsplitter bearbeitet – vorwiegend zu Messern oder Brieföffnern.

- L’artisanat de tranchée, appelé aussi « Art du Poilu » ou « Art des tranchées » – Trench Art par les anglophones – désigne une activité de création artistique manuelle et un art populaire pratiqué – entre autres – par tout homme, ayant un rapport direct ou indirect avec le conflit armé ou ses conséquences. - Trench art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. It offers an insight not only to their feelings and emotions about the war, but also their surroundings and the materials they had available to them. Not limited to the World Wars, the history of trench art spans conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the present day. Although the practice flourished during World War I, the term 'trench art' is also used to describe souvenirs manufactured by service personnel during World War II. Some items manufactured by soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians during earlier conflicts have been retrospectively described as trench art. (en)
