- The Russian braid (Russian: Русская коса, Russkaya kosa) is a national traditional hairstyle in Russia. It has an ancient history since the times of the Rus'. In modern Russia the hairstyle is still widespread among girls and women, while the symbolism behind the Russian braid is no longer so strong in modern Russia. It also plays an important role in Russian folk dance and Russian folk song ensembles. In Rus it was uncommon for women to cut their hair, so they would grow it for a long period of time and braid their long hair. The Russian braid symbolized honor and pride and had several meanings in Old Russia. One large and long braid was worn by girls in active search for a groom, while two braids which were tied around the head meant the girl was in marriage. If a colourful ribbon was woven into a braid, it meant that the girl is for marriage, when two ribbons appeared, it meant that the official groom was found. The end of a long braid was often adorned by a kosnik, a piece of jewelry that was made of birch bark. (en)
- La treccia russa (in russo: Русская коса, Russkaya kosa) è una acconciatura tradizionale della Russia. Essa ha una storia antica che rimanda all'antico popolo dei Rus'. Nella moderna Russia ancora le acconciature hanno un significato particolare per le ragazze e le donne, mentre il simbolismo che un tempo si trovava dietro a queste è andato scomparendo. Essa gioca ancora un ruolo fondamentale nelle danze folcloristiche russe e nel costume. Presso i Rus le donne non erano solite tagliarsi i capelli e pertanto questi crescevano copiosamente e, per non calpestarli, queste pensarono di acconciarli in una treccia. La treccia russa simboleggiava un tempo onorabilità e rispetto, nonché eleganza. Le donne in età da marito alla ricerca di un partito portavano sovente una lunga treccia unica, mentre da sposate erano solite portarne due arrotolate alla testa. Se la treccia era decorata con un nastro colorato significava che la ragazza era in età da marito, mentre quanto i nastri erano due significava che aveva trovato uno sposo. La base della treccia era impreziosita da un kokoshnik, un gioiello a raggiera che poteva anche essere realizzato in legno di betulla.
