- Chelonoidis niger phantasticus (commonly known as the Fernandina Island Galápagos tortoise or Narborough Island giant tortoise) is a subspecies of Galápagos tortoise that was discovered in 1906 and thought extinct, until a single female was discovered living on Fernandina Island by an expedition in February 2019. In May 2021, a genetic test carried out by scientists from the California Academy of Sciences confirmed that the single female tortoise discovered in 2019 is from the subspecies Chelonoidis niger phantasticus. The subspecies name has often been misspelled as phantastica, an error introduced in the 1980s when Chelonoidis was elevated to genus and mistakenly treated as feminine, an error recognized and fixed in 2017. Od tego czasu nie widywano osobników tego gatunku, jednak podczas badań z użyciem helikoptera w 1964 r. znaleziono żółwie odchody i ślady ugryzień na opuncjach w odległości 6 km od brzegu i na wysokości 360 m n.p.m., podczas zwiadu lotniczego w 2009 r. na zboczach wulkanu zgłoszono niepotwierdzony przypadek dostrzeżenia żółwia, a w 2013 r. rezultatem badań nad wegetacją roślin było odkrycie odchodów i tropów. W 2019 r. odkryto jedną samicę należącą do tego gatunku, na lato 2019 r. zaplanowano ekspedycję poszukiwawczą celem znalezienia samca do rozrodu. Gatunek lądowy, dostosowany do żerowania na wysokich roślinach, np. opuncjach. Skorupa siodłowanego kształtu. Dożywa ok. 60 lat. Głównym zagrożeniem jest niszczenie siedlisk przez erupcje wulkaniczne. Gatunek krytycznie zagrożony wyginięciem, chroniony na podstawie krajowych przepisów, poprzez objęcie siedliska terenem Parku Narodowego Galapagos oraz poprzez uwzględnienie w załączniku I do konwencji o międzynarodowym handlu dzikimi zwierzętami i roślinami gatunków zagrożonych wyginięciem.
