- Ferfer (auch Fer Fer; Somali Feerfeer, Amharisch ፌርፌር Fērfēr) ist ein Ort nahe am Fluss Shabelle, an der Grenze zwischen Äthiopien und der Region Hiiraan in Somalia. Innerhalb Äthiopiens ist Ferfer Hauptort der gleichnamigen Woreda in der Gode-Zone der Somali-Region. 2005 hatte Ferfer nach Angaben der Zentralen Statistikagentur Äthiopiens 4.411 Einwohner. Gemäß der Volkszählung 1997 waren alle 2.956 Einwohner Somali. Wichtigste Clans sind die Hawadle-Hawiya und die Reer Aw Hassan. Wegen seiner Lage an der Grenze war Ferfer von den Konflikten zwischen Somalia und Äthiopien um das Ogadengebiet betroffen. So kam es im Zuge des kurzen Grenzkrieges von 1964 zu Gefechten. Auch nach der Niederlage Somalias im Ogadenkrieg 1977/78 blieb die Grenzstadt zunächst unter Kontrolle somalischer Truppen, ebenso wie Mustahil, Geladin, Shilabo und weitere Orte. Weiterhin ist Ferfer Standort einer wichtigen Basis der äthiopischen Armee, von der aus äthiopische Soldaten verschiedentlich in den Bürgerkrieg in Somalia eingriffen. Im Juni 2008 drang die islamistische Gruppierung al-Shabaab aus Somalia kurzzeitig nach Ferfer vor. Ende 2009 drohte , eine weitere Gruppierung, mit Angriffen gegen die Armeebasis und Regierungsgebäude in Ferfer. Ferfer war immer wieder von Überschwemmungen am Shabelle betroffen, unter anderem 1997 und 1999. Das malaysische Unternehmen Petronas hat Konzessionen für die Suche nach Erdöl und Erdgas in Ferfer erworben. (de)
- Ferfer is a town in the Ethiopian Somali Regional State, on the border with the Somali Hiran region (Beledweyne District). The town straddles the disputed 1950's-era Provisional Administrative Line (as depicted on virtually all worldwide maps, atlases, and geographic websites) that separates the Ogaden region of Ethiopia from Somalia, and has a latitude and longitude of 05°05′N 45°08′E / 5.083°N 45.133°E with an elevation of 230 meters above sea level. During the first three months of 1964, heavy fighting took place between Ethiopia and Somalia at several border points in the Ogaden, one of which was Ferfer. Ferfer was among the locations within Ethiopia that were still under Somali control after Somalia's defeat in the Ogaden War of 1977/78. The Ethiopian army maintains an important base in Ferfer. In June 2008, the border town was briefly seized by the Somali al-Shabaab. (en)
