- The Demarest Building was a multi-purpose commercial building at 339 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building was designed by Renwick, Aspinwall & Russell and constructed for coachbuilder Aaron T. Demarest in the downtown commerce district to showcase the high-end carriages that he manufactured there. The building was the first with an electric elevator. In 1893, a fire broke out in the building that destroyed most of the 200 carriages in stock at the time, valued at nearly three-quarters of a million dollars in 2020 dollars. After Demarest stopped using the building to manufacture and showcase his carriages, the building was leased out in sections for a hundred years. Permits have been filed for a high-rise, 21-story building to be built in its place, but there is an active effort to retain two significant facades as of 2021. (en)
