W 1872 wyjechał do Rzymu, gdzie studiował w i poznał José Villegasa, José Jiméneza Aranda i Marià Fortuny. Fortuny wprowadził Mattoniego do tematyki orientalnej (El vendedor de tapices, Moro en un zoco, Mercader árabe) i historycznej. (pl)
