| - La Resolució 1179 del Consell de Seguretat de les Nacions Unides fou adoptada per unanimitat el 29 de juny de 1998. Després de reafirmar totes les resolucions passades sobre la situació a Xipre, el Consell va discutir els intents de resoldre la controvèrsia política de Xipre de llarga durada. El Consell de Seguretat va demanar a tots els estats que respectessin la sobirania i la integritat territorial de la República de Xipre i s'abstinguessin d'accions que la perjudiquessin, dividir l'illa o buscar la unió amb un altre país. També va expressar la seva preocupació perquè les negociacions entre la República de Xipre i Xipre del Nord encara no havia avançat substancialment, malgrat el suport de les Nacions Unides. La resolució va reafirmar la posició que el statu quo era inacceptable i que la situació s'havia de resoldre a partir d'un sol estat de Xipre amb dues comunitats políticament iguals en una unió bicomunal i bizonal sense secessió o unió amb un altre país. Va donar la benvinguda a la intenció del secretari general de Kofi Annan d'explorar noves possibilitats que conduiran a un nou impuls en el procés de negociació. El bàndol en particular va ser cridat a comprometre's amb aquest procés, mentre que es va instar a ambdues parts a cooperar amb el secretari general per reprendre el diàleg. - United Nations Security Council resolution 1179, adopted unanimously on 29 June 1998, after reaffirming all past resolutions on the situation in Cyprus, the Council discussed attempts to resolve the long-standing political dispute. The Security Council called on all states to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and to refrain from actions that would prejudice this, divide the island or seek union with another country. It also expressed concern at negotiations between Cyprus and Northern Cyprus had yet to make any substantial progress despite United Nations support. The resolution reaffirmed the position that the status quo was unacceptable and that the situation must be settled on the basis of a single state of Cyprus with two politically equal communities in a bi-communal and bi-zonal union without secession or union with another country. It welcomed the Secretary-General Kofi Annan's intention to explore new possibilities that would lead to new momentum in the negotiation process. The Turkish Cypriot side in particular was called upon to commit itself to this process, while both parties were urged to co-operate with the Secretary-General in order to resume dialogue. Finally, Kofi Annan was instructed to report on the situation on the island by 10 December 1998. (en)
