Timaeus the Sophist (Greek: Τίμαιος ὁ Σοφιστής) was a Greek philosopher who lived sometime between the 1st and 4th centuries. Nothing is known about his life. He is the supposed author of a Lexicon of Platonic words which is still extant. The Lexicon made use of earlier commentaries on Plato which are now lost. It underwent significant additions and subtractions of text during later periods leading to the inclusion of many words which have nothing to do with Plato or his philosophy. The purpose of the Lexicon was to explain the usage of words and phrases which occur in Plato's works. The first detailed study of the manuscript and edition of the Lexicon was produced in the late 18th century by David Ruhnken (1754; 2nd ed. 1789) who also provided a detailed commentary. Plusieurs ajouts ou retraits ultérieurs ont eu pour conséquence l'inclusion d'entrées n'ayant plus de rapport à Platon ou à sa philosophie. La première étude détaillée de ce manuscrit a été réalisée au XVIIIe siècle par Ruhnkenius, qui en a publié le texte avec commentaires (Leyde, 1764). (fr)

Podria ser que l'autor hagués viscut al segle iii, però no se sap segur. El Lexicó, que és breu, porta el títol de Τιμαίου σοφιστοῦ ἐκ τῶν τοῦ Πλάτωνος λέξεων ("Timaíou sophistou ek ton tou Platonos lexeon" Un lèxic sobre Plató escrit per Timeu sofista) i potser és un resum d'una obra més llarga, encara que Foci diu que era una obra curta. Tot i la seva brevetat, l'obra presenta moltes interpolacions, especialment en les paraules que apareixen a Heròdot. Malgrat les interpolacions, les paraules que inclou i les seves explicacions són molt interessants i és una obra especialment útil en el camp de la gramàtica. Una obra en 68 llibres anomenada Συλλογὴ ῥητορικῶν ἀφορμῶν ("Sillogé retorikón áphormon", col·lecció d'inicis de retòrica) que Suides assigna a Timeu de Tauromenium, probablement és en realitat obra seva.
