Para probarlos, Zeus los visitó en forma de campesino. Mezclaron las entrañas de un niño en la comida del dios, tras lo cual, enfurecido, el rey de los dioses arrojó la comida sobre la mesa. Tesproto fue asesinado, junto con sus hermanos y su padre, por un rayo del dios.

* Thesprotus, an Arcadian prince as one of the 50 sons of the impious King Lycaon either by the naiad Cyllene, Nonacris or by unknown woman. He was the eponymous hero of Thesprotia. His son was Ambrax eponymous of Ambracia. Thresprotus and his siblings were the most nefarious and carefree of all people. To test them, Zeus visited them in the form of a peasant. They mixed the entrails of a child into the god's meal, whereupon the enraged the king of the gods threw the meal over the table. Thesprotus was killed, along with his brothers and their father, by a lightning bolt of the god.

Nach einer anderen Version verließen einige der 22 Söhne des Lykaon ihre Heimat, da sie mit dem kleinen Erbe, das sie erhalten sollten, unzufrieden waren. Thesprotos landete an der Mündung des Acheron und gründete Thesprotia. Er zeugte den Ambrakos, den Gründer von Ambrakia. Thesprotos soll auch die Stadt Kichyros, die später nach seinem Enkel Ephyros benannt wurde, gegründet haben. Nachdem Atreus, die beiden Kinder seines Bruders Thyestes getötet hatte, floh dieser zu Thesprotos. Hyginus Mythographus verlegte dessen Residenz vom Acherousischen See in Epirus an den See von Avernus in Italien. Ein Orakel hatte Thyestes offenbart, dass ein Sohn, den er mit seiner Tochter Pelopeia zeugt, den Atreus schließlich töten würde, und so teilte er mit seiner Tochter das Bett. Kurze Zeit später besuchte Atreus auf der Suche nach seinem Bruder Thyestes König Thesprotos. Thyestes war inzwischen abgereist, seine Tochter weilte jedoch noch bei Thesprotos. Atreus glaubte, Pelopeia sei die Tochter des Thesprotos, und hielt um ihre Hand an. Thesprotos willigte ein und so heiratete er die Tochter seines Bruders. Sie gebar den Aigisthos, der später Atreus tötete. (de)
