The Southern Province Railway was a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) narrow gauge rail network in Tanzania, which was operated only for a few years in the middle of the 20th Century. It ultimately comprised about 275 route kilometers. The central line of the railway network was Mtwara - Nachingwea. The isolated network operated without connection to the national network. Because of the failure of the Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme the rail system was deprived of its economic existence. After the independence of Tanzania, operations were ceased in February 1963 and the line was abandoned.

| - Die Southern Province Railway war ein Eisenbahnnetz in Tansania, das – nur wenige Jahre – in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts betrieben wurde. Es umfasste letztlich etwa 275 km in der Spurweite 610 mm. Zentrale Strecke des Netzes war die Bahnstrecke Mtwara–Nachingwea. Das Netz stellte einen Inselbetrieb ohne Anschluss an eine andere Bahn dar. Auslöser für den Bahnbau war das Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme, ein seitens der damaligen Kolonialmacht Großbritannien vorangetriebenes, letztlich aber gescheitertes Entwicklungsvorhaben, dessen zentraler Bestandteil Erdnussanbau in gigantischem Maßstab war. Um die Ernte abtransportieren zu können, wurde durch die zunächst 1949 eine Strecke von nach Nachingwea in Betrieb genommen und ein Jahr später nach Lindi am Indischen Ozean verlängert. Diese Verlängerung nutzte auch die Trasse einer um 1921 eröffneten einer 18 km langen Feldbahn in der Spurweite 600 mm, die von einer Sisal- Plantage bei Lindi nach verlief. Als die Overseas Food Cooperation 1952 in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten geriet, wurde die Eisenbahn zunächst von den East African Railways übernommen und weiter zu einem Netz ausgebaut. So wurde 1954 der neu errichtete Hafen von Mikindani und die Hafenstadt Mtwara angeschlossen. 1958 folgte noch die Strecke –Masasi. Eingesetzt wurden sowohl Dampf- (die Baureihen RV/21, G und NZ) als auch Diesellokomotiven (die Baureihen 80 und 81). Personenverkehr bestand zwischen Mtwara und Nachingwea. Dafür wurde ein umgespurter Dieseltriebwagen der früheren Kenya and Uganda Railways eingesetzt. Nach dem Scheitern des Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme war dem Bahnsystem seine wirtschaftliche Grundlage entzogen. Nach der Unabhängigkeit von Tansania wurde es aufgegeben und der Betrieb im Februar 1963 eingestellt. (de)
