South Arcot District was a district in the Madras Presidency of British India. It covered the area of the present-day districts of Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Viluppuram in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The district was divided into eight taluks and covered a total area of 13,510 square kilometres (5,217 sq mi). The administrative headquarters was the town of Cuddalore. The economy is largely agricultural. South Arcot is noteworthy for lignite mines in Neyveli.

- South Arcot ist ein ehemaliger Distrikt in Indien. Er bestand von 1801 bis 1993 und umfasste das Gebiet der heutigen Distrikte Viluppuram und Cuddalore im Bundesstaat Tamil Nadu. Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts war die Stadt Cuddalore. Der Distrikt South Arcot entstand im Jahr 1801, als der , der zuvor die nördlichen Teile des heutigen Tamil Nadu beherrscht hatte, seine Territorien an die Britische Ostindien-Kompanie abtrat. Das Gebiet von Arcot wurde in die Distrikte North Arcot und South Arcot geteilt und der Präsidentschaft Madras unterstellt. Nach der indischen Unabhängigkeit kam der Distrikt North Arcot im Zuge des States Reorganisation Act 1956 an den neuformierten Bundesstaat Madras, der nunmehr die tamilischsprachigen Gebiete umfasste und 1969 in Tamil Nadu umbenannt wurde. 1993 wurde der Distrikt South Arcot in die Distrikte Viluppuram und Cuddalore geteilt. In ancient times, South Arcot was a part of the Chola and the Pallava kingdoms. British presence in the district dates to 1690 when the British East India Company set up a factory at Fort St David near Cuddalore. South Arcot was the scene of confrontation between the British and the French and the British and Tipu Sultan. The British took over the administration in 1781 and established full sovereignty in 1801. The economy is largely agricultural. South Arcot is noteworthy for lignite mines in Neyveli. (en)
