Sophilos (Ancient Greek: Σώφιλος; active about 590 – 570 BC) was an Attic potter and vase painter in the black-figure style. Sophilos is the oldest Attic vase painter so far to be known by his true name. Fragments of two wine basins ('’dinoi’’) in Athens are signed by him, indicating that he both potted and painted them. In total, 37 vessels are ascribed to him, mostly amphorae, '’dinoi’’, kraters, as well as three pinakes. Apart from his work for the domestic market, he was also one of the masters of major significance in the process of supplanting the dominance of in the markets of Etruria, and Southern Italy, the most important export area for Greek vases.   • Sophilos est l'un des plus célèbres peintre sur vase à figures noires de l'Athènes antique. Il est également le premier dont on connaisse le nom. C'est l'un des premiers peintres attiques à peindre des inscriptions sur ses vases et le premier à signer ses vases : il inaugure la formule qui deviendra classique par la suite, c'est-à-dire son nom suivi de εγραφσεν (sic), « a peint » ou « a dessiné » (sous-entendu, ce vase). Son apogée se situe vers 580-570 av. J.-C., c'est-à-dire dans la deuxième génération de la figure noire, d'inspiration corinthienne, spécialisée dans la frise animale. Prawdopodobnie wywarł wpływ na twórczość młodszego od siebie Klitiasa.
