Michael John Bettaney (13 February 1950 – 16 August 2018), also known as Michael Malkin, was a British intelligence officer who worked in the counter-espionage branch of the Security Service often known as MI5. He was convicted at the Old Bailey in 1984 of offences under section 1 of the Official Secrets Act 1911 after passing sensitive documents to the Soviet Embassy in London and attempting to act as an agent-in-place for the Soviet Union.

Lorsqu'il travaillait au bureau Russie du MI5, il a ramené à son domicile un grand nombre de documents secrets des bureaux du MI5, avant d'essayer de les envoyer au KGB. Bettaney ne savait pas qu'un membre du KGB, le colonel Oleg Gordievsky, était un agent du MI6. Gordievsky a informé le MI6 et les autorités britanniques ont réussi à identifier et arrêter Michael Bettaney. La gestion de Bettaney lorsqu'il travaillait pour le MI5 a été examinée par une Commission de sécurité, a conclu que « Le Security Service a commis un certain nombre d'erreurs et la Commission les critique sévèrement en ce qui concerne la gestion de carrière de Bettaney... » Bettaney a été condamné à 23 ans de prison, a été libéré sur parole en 1998.
