The Mekong expedition of 1866–1868, conceived and promoted by a group of French colonial officers and launched under the leadership of captain Ernest Doudard de Lagrée, was a naval exploration and scientific expedition of the Mekong River on behalf of the French colonial authorities of Cochinchina. Its primary objective, besides scientific documentation, mapping, and the mission civilisatrice, was an assessment of the river's navigability in order to link the delta region and the port of Saigon with the riches of southern China and upper Siam (modern day Thailand). Ambitions were to turn Saigon into a successful commercial center such as British controlled Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River.

Dans un contexte de concurrence entre puissances coloniales pour l'accès au marché chinois, son principal objectif est d'établir la navigabilité du Mékong en direction de la Chine. La mission débute le 7 juin 1866 à Saïgon. Elle se termine deux années plus tard dans cette même ville, le 29 juin 1868. (fr) La spedizione Doudard de Lagrée-Garnier fu una missione esplorativa condotta lungo il fiume Mekong guidata dal capitano per conto delle autorità coloniali francesi della Cocincina tra il 1866 e il 1868. Il suo obiettivo principale era quello di fornire, oltre a documentazione scientifica e cartografica, un giudizio circa la reale navigabilità del fiume; l'intento dei francesi era infatti quello di utilizzare il fiume come tra la regione del delta dove si trovava il porto di Saigon e le ricchezze del Siam settentrionale e della Cina meridionale. In questo speravano difatti di rendere Saigon un prospero centro portuale e commerciale così come lo era Sciangai, situata alla foce del fiume Giallo, per i britannici. (it)
