Mahahual (Spanish pronunciation: [maxaˈwal]) is a village on the Costa Maya in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Previously a fishing village, it is now a rapidly developing tourist center. The name of Mahahual possibly comes from the word "mahahua", a medium-sized tree native to tropical America. In 2010, Mahahual had a population of 920. Mahahual is to become a larger tourist center with an airport and a large dock for cruise ships.

Mahahual heeft zo'n 2000 inwoners en is gelegen in de gemeente Othón P. Blanco. Orkaan Dean kwam in augustus 2007 in Mahahual aan land. 80% van de bebouwing werd verwoest, maar er werden geen slachtoffers gemeld. The village of Mahahual is only about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) away from the Costa Maya cruise port, and cruise ships can easily be seen from the village. Mahahual has soft sand beaches, grass-thatched palapas, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef that runs along the coast. Many hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops can be found in this quaint tourist town. In 2010, Mahahual had a population of 920. Mahahual is to become a larger tourist center with an airport and a large dock for cruise ships. A new development called New Mahahual is being created directly inland from the port. When ships are in port, the village is busy with cruise passengers. Mayor Obed Durón Gomez was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while en route to Xcalak on 6 April 2020. (en)

- Mahahual of Majahual is een klein, rustig vissersdorp gelegen aan de Mexicaanse Caribische kust, 360 kilometer ten zuiden van Cancún, in de staat Quintana Roo. Mahahual heeft zo'n 2000 inwoners en is gelegen in de gemeente Othón P. Blanco. Vlak voor de kust van Mahahual ligt het op een na grootste nog levende koraalrif, het . Dit rif strekt zich uit van Mexico tot aan Honduras. Om de honderden hectares mangrovebossen (een beschermde boomsoort) langs de kust te beschermen heeft de Mexicaanse regering in 2000 (geheel in lijn met de internationale milieuwetgeving) een milieubestemmingsplan gepubliceerd. Volgens deze nieuwe wet mogen er alleen vergunningen uitgegeven worden voor kleinschalige toeristische projecten. Daarmee probeert men te voorkomen dat Mahahual dezelfde kant op zal gaan als massa toeristische steden als Cancún en Playa del Carmen. Zon 34 kilometer uit de kust ligt een atolrifformatie bestaande uit 3 atollen: Cayo Norte, Cayo Central en Cayo Lobos. Doordat er behoorlijk wat schepen op het rif gelopen zijn gedurende de afgelopen eeuwen, ligt de zeebodem van Chinchorro bezaaid met scheepswrakken. Banco Chinchorro is een populaire duiklocatie vanwege de enorme hoeveelheden verschillende tropische vis en koraal en vanwege de mogelijkheid om tussen de scheepswrakken door te snorkelen en duiken.
