Kommando) – podstawowa komórka w organizacji pracy w niemieckich obozach koncentracyjnych, składająca się z kilku, kilkudziesięciu bądź nawet kilkuset więźniów, na czele których stał więzień funkcyjny kapo. Komanda wywodzą się z organizacji pracy pierwszych transportów, które budowały obóz od podstaw (stawiały baraki, kopały rowy i tym podobne). Psychicznie najcięższą pracą była ta przy wypróżnianiu komór gazowych i obsłudze krematoriów (to komando było prawie zawsze złożone wyłącznie z Żydów), nazywane w Auschwitz-Birkenau Sonderkomandem. Before and during World War II, the basic unit of organization of forced labourers in Nazi concentration camps, equivalent to a detail or detachment were referred to as Kommandos. Among the most notable of such units were the Sonderkommandos (lit. 'Special Kommandos'), carrying out the Final Solution by guarding the newly arrived inmates, escorting them to gas chambers, searching the bodies and burning them. Außenkommandos were external work details that were set up, either leaving from the concentration camp or from outside the camp boundary. In Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account, concentration camp survivor Dr. Miklós Nyiszli (who served on Dr. Josef Mengele's medical kommando) describes the "tooth-pulling kommando". These teams of eight, all "fine stomatologists and dental surgeons" equipped "in one hand with a lever, and in the other a pair of pliers for extracting teeth", worked in the crematoria. Stationed in front of the ovens, their job was to pry open the mouths of prisoners who had been gassed and extract, or break off, "all gold teeth, as well as any gold bridgework and fillings". Other kommandos depended on the job they were assigned to, such as woodcutting kommandos, factory kommandos or kitchen kommandos. (en)

W systemie śmiertelnego wycieńczania pracą dostanie się do określonego komanda było kwestią życia lub śmierci. Do najtrudniejszych komand należały zatrudnione przy fizycznej pracy na zewnątrz. Zimą zbierały one największą liczbę ofiar. W niektórych perspektywa życia nie była większa niż 2–3 tygodnie. Do najlżejszych, rokujących na dłuższe przeżycie należała na przykład praca w kuchni, w orkiestrze obozowej, w administracji, czy praca przy sortowaniu różnego rodzaju mienia po zagazowanych, w „Kanadzie”. Komanda pracujące na zewnątrz obozu stwarzały z kolei szansę więźniom na „zorganizowanie” dodatkowych racji żywnościowych, nielegalnych narzędzi, lekarstw (często przy pomocy okolicznej ludności). Były one ułatwieniem dla szukających ucieczki z obozu. Psychicznie najcięższą pracą była ta przy wypróżnianiu komór gazowych i obsłudze krematoriów (to komando było prawie zawsze złożone wyłącznie z Żydów), nazywane w Auschwitz-Birkenau Sonderkomandem. Z rozwojem gospodarczej roli obozów powstawały komanda obsługujące nie tylko sam obóz i jego zbrodniczą machinę, lecz całą siatkę przedsiębiorstw niemieckich. Kierownictwo obozu wynajmowało więźniów, jako tanią siłę roboczą. Niektóre fabryki usytuowane były za daleko od obozu macierzystego, aby codziennie mogły dochodzić do nich komanda więźniów.
