Mestre João Faras, better known simply as Mestre João ('Master John"), was an astrologer, astronomer, physician and surgeon of King Manuel I of Portugal who accompanied Pedro Álvares Cabral in the discovery of Brazil in 1500, and wrote a famous letter identifying the Southern Cross constellation.

Cette expédition est considérée comme étant la première à toucher le Brésil. Il y suggère au roi de demander une carte où il pourrait localiser l'expédition ce qui prouverait que les Portugais connaissaient déjà le territoire brésilien. La fut découverte par l'historien Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, et fut publiée pour la première fois en 1843. (fr) João Faras ou João Emeneslau, mais conhecido como Mestre João, era um médico, astrônomo, astrólogo e físico espanhol presente na expedição comandada por Pedro Álvares Cabral que aportou no Brasil em abril de 1500, sendo considerado por muito tempo como a primeira a chegar em terras brasileiras. Seu nome verdadeiro, João Faras, foi descoberto somente três séculos após a viagem ao Brasil. (pt)
