I sin dikt "To Althea, from Prison" från 1642 skrev Richard Lovelace följande ord under tiden som han satt fängslad i Gatehouse: "Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage." (sv)

Coinníodh roinnt Éireannach anseo agus baint ag an scéal le Máire Stíobhartach Ní Dhomhnaill, iníon Bhrighid Nic Gearailt agus Rudhraighe Ó Domhnaill, Iarla Thír Chonaill. Bhí sí ina cónaí i Sasana lena seanmháthair Bantiarna Chill Dara agus caidreamh aici ar Éireannaigh óga Chaitliceacha i Londain a bhí mídhílis don rialtas. I samhradh na bliana 1626, nuair a bhí Máire 19 bliana d’aois, bhris sí féin agus scata cairde isteach i bPríosún an Tí Geata agus d’fhuascail a leasdeartháir Caifir “Con” Ó Domhnaill agus a col ceathrar Aodh Ó Ruairc, beirt a cuireadh i ngéibheann toisc gur dhiúltaigh siad éirí as an éileamh a bhí acu ar thailte plandáilte i mBréifne Thiar. B’éigean di éalú chun na Mór-Roinne mar ar chaith sí saol eachtrúil. Leagadh an príosún in 1776. Tá cuimhneachán scoláirí Westminster ar Chogadh na Crimé ar an láithreán anois, os comhair Dhoras Mór Thiar na hArdeaglaise. (ga)
