Fort Fetterman was constructed in 1867 by the United States Army on the Great Plains frontier in Dakota Territory, approximately 11 miles northwest of present-day Douglas, Wyoming. Après l'abandon des forts Reno, C. F. Smith et Phil Kearny le long de la piste Bozeman, Fort Fetterman devient une position de premier ordre au cœur du pays amérindien et sert de base pour plusieurs opérations contre les Indiens des Plaines. Il a été nommé en l'honneur du capitaine William J. Fetterman tué en décembre 1866 près de Fort Phil Kearny lors du « massacre de Fetterman ». Platsen ligger på en höjd på södra sidan av North Platte River, strax uppströms om den lilla orten Orpha, Wyoming och omkring 17 kilometer nordväst om staden Douglas i Converse County, Wyoming. Fortet döptes till minne av kaptenen William J. Fetterman, som stupat 1866 i Fettermanmassakern.
