Eduard David Mortier Fraenkel FBA (17 March 1888 – 5 February 1970) was a German classical scholar who served as the Corpus Christi Professor of Latin at the University of Oxford from 1935 until 1953. Born to a family of assimilated Jews in the German Empire, he studied Classics at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen. In 1934, antisemitic legislation introduced by the Nazi Party forced him to seek refuge in the United Kingdom where he eventually settled at Corpus Christi College.

En 1934, la législation antisémite introduite par le parti nazi l'oblige à se réfugier au Royaume-Uni, où il s'installe finalement à l'université d'Oxford et à son Corpus Christi College. Fraenkel studerade klassisk filologi i Berlin och i Göttingen, där han 1912 promoverades till filosofie doktor. Efter att ha varit verksam vid i München genomförde han 1917 sin habilitation i Berlin med undersökningar om originaliteten hos Plautus. År 1920 utnämndes han där till extra ordinarie professor. Tre år senare antog han en kallelse till ordinarie professor i klassisk filologi vid Kiels universitet. År 1928 flyttade han (som efterträdare till Richard Reitzenstein på den lärostol som tidigare tillhörde hans lärare Friedrich Leo) till Göttingen, tre år senare till Freiburg. Vid sidan av sin tjänst där höll han föreläsningar vid universitetet i Basel. (sv)
