Elle a été créée en 1949 et elle porte le nom de l'explorateur John Oxley. Elle s'étend au sud-ouest du centre-ville de Brisbane et comprend une partie de la ville d'Ipswich. Une première circonscription avait été créée en 1901 mais elle a été supprimée en 1934 et remplacée par la circonscription de Griffith. Son député le plus célèbre est Bill Hayden qui fut le chef de l'opposition travailliste de 1977 à 1983 avant de devenir gouverneur général en 1988.
