Digestate is the material remaining after the anaerobic digestion (decomposition under low oxygen conditions) of a biodegradable feedstock. Anaerobic digestion produces two main products: digestate and biogas. Digestate is produced both by acidogenesis and methanogenesis and each has different characteristics. These characteristics stem from the original feedstock source as well as the processes themselves.

- Le digestat (à ne pas confondre avec le compost) est le résidu du processus de méthanisation (digestion anaérobie) de matières organiques naturelles ou de Produits résiduaires organiques (PRO) ; l'autre produit étant le biogaz. C'est une matière (solide ou liquide pâteuse) qui représente entre 70 et 80 % de la masse introduite dans le digesteur et qui est composée d'éléments organiques non minéralisés et de minéraux. Le digestat peut être mis en « maturation aérobie », séché, chaulé… Sa fraction solide peut aussi être compostée ou cocompostée avec d'autres déchets ou produits organiques (matériaux ligneux par exemple). Si ses caractéristiques physicochimiques et biologiques le permettent (pas de contamination excessive par des ETM, composés organiques et/ou microbes ou parasite indésirables), il peut directement être épandu sur des sols cultivés, éventuellement après séparation de phases solides et liquides et/ou compostage, chaulage, etc. Il contribue ainsi au recyclage de biodéchets et au retour au sol des matières organiques promu par l'économie circulaire. Door de vergisting wordt het organisch materiaal in de mest deels afgebroken tot gas. Zo kan bijvoorbeeld de C/N-coëfficiënt (koolstof/stikstof verhouding) van varkensmest verschuiven van 7 naar 2. Ook komt er voor de planten meer makkelijk opneembare stikstof vrij. (nl)
