Canoe freestyle (also known as playboating) is a discipline of whitewater kayaking or canoeing where people perform various technical moves in one place (a playspot), as opposed to downriver whitewater canoeing or kayaking where the objective is to travel the length of a section of river (although whitewater paddlers will often stop and play en route). Specialised canoes or kayaks (boats) known as playboats are often used, but any boat can be used for playing. The moves and tricks are often similar to those performed by snowboarders, surfers or skaters, where the athlete completes spins, flips, turns, etc. With modern playboats it is possible to get the kayak and the paddler completely airborne while performing tricks. Dabei surft der Kanute auf einer künstlichen oder natürlichen Welle oder Walze und bewegt, bei fortgeschrittenem Können, sein Boot – Kajak oder Kanadier – in verschiedenen Figuren. Die Ausübung des Sports an einer einzigen Welle oder Walze (sogenannter Playspot) und das Verlassen des Gewässers an der Einstiegsstelle werden im Paddlerjargon als Park and play (englisch für „Parken und spielen“) bezeichnet. Für diese spezielle Ausführungsform eignen sich stehende Wellen und Walzen. Das Kanu kann an diesen Stellen gehalten werden, und es besteht die Möglichkeit, Figuren, beispielsweise Loopings, auszuführen. Alternativ werden Flussabschnitte hinuntergefahren und „unterwegs“ Wellen und Walzen zum Kanurodeo genutzt. Kanurodeo wird vor allem an Flüssen mit Walzen und stehenden Wellen ausgeübt. Möglich ist auch die Nutzung von Wellen auf dem Meer oder in Flussmündungen, die in der Brandung oder infolge von Gezeitenströmen zustande kommen. Zunehmend werden außerdem künstlich angelegte (z. B. Augsburger Eiskanal) oder aufbereitete Gewässer genutzt. (de)

En novembre 2021, le Freestyle est officiellement reconnu comme discipline sportive à caractère de haut-niveau. Les embarcations utilisées ont des formes radicales détonants des formes traditionnelles. Les bateaux sont courts et avec des carres vives, ont un volume essentiellement positionné au niveau de l'hiloire, des pointes fines et sont un gironnés. Ces formes permettent de faciliter les rotations dans les trois dimensions et de permettre un effet bouchon.
