| - La bataille de Patras fut livrée pendant l'été 429 av. J.-C., au large de Patras, au sud de la Grèce, pendant la guerre du Péloponnèse. Les 20 trirèmes athéniennes de l'amiral Phormion y anéantirent un convoi spartiate et corinthien de 47 navires chargés d'approvisionnements destinés aux troupes péloponnésiennes engagées dans la campagne d'Acarnanie. Les navires péloponnésiens, qui n'étaient pas équipés pour une bataille, se placèrent en cercle pour mieux se défendre mais les équipages athéniens, beaucoup plus expérimentés, manœuvrèrent afin de faire entrer en collision les navires adverses. Quand cela arriva, avec l'aide du vent, la flotte athénienne passa à l'attaque et captura 12 navires, les autres prenant la fuite. (fr)

- The Battle of Rhium (429 BC) or the battle of Chalcis was a naval battle in the Peloponnesian War between an Athenian fleet commanded by Phormio and a Peloponnesian fleet composed of contingents from various states, each with its own commander. The battle came about when the Peloponnesian fleet, numbering 47 triremes, attempted to cross over to the northern shore of the Gulf of Patras to attack Acarnania in support of an offensive in northwestern Greece; Phormio's fleet attacked the Peloponnesians while they were making the crossing. - De Slag bij Rhium was een zeeslag tijdens de Peloponnesische Oorlog tussen een Atheense vloot onder leiding van Phormio, en een Peloponnesische vloot samengesteld uit schepen van verschillende stadstaten, elk met zijn eigen generaal. Pomimo że przeważali liczebnie nad flotą ateńską, Peloponezyjczycy obawiali się bardziej doświadczonego przeciwnika. Po napotkaniu Ateńczyków, ustawili swoje okręty w szyk obronny w formie kręgu, ustawiając w środku okręty z żołnierzami, natomiast rezerwę stanowiło pięć najszybszych trier.
