Bartabas (born Clément Marty, 2 June 1957) is the performing name of a French horse trainer, film producer and impresario. He created his first theater company at age seventeen, and later founded the performing troupe, Cirque Aligre. In 1984, he founded the equestrian performing show, Zingaro, which means "Gypsy". The name was taken from the name of his first horse, a spectacular Friesian horse who was also the star of his shows.

He also produced two movies: Mazeppa (1993) and Chamane (1995), both of which featured spectacular equestrian action. Mazeppa was entered into the 1993 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Technical Grand Prize. Though he is not a household name in the United States, among those who know horses he is considered one of the most talented trainers currently living [1]. In Japan, he is well known for his performances which blend equine acrobatics and explosive pyrotechnics. In 2002, he founded the Académie du Spectacle Équestre (Academy of Equestrian Arts) [2] in the Grande Ecurie of the Palace of Versailles. (en)

Bartabas werd geboren als zoon van een arts en een architect. Vanaf zijn 17e leefde hij op straat. In de jaren 80 begon Bartabas met drie vrienden zijn eerste paardencircus. Ze namen allen een gefingeerde naam aan - Bartabas, Igor, Branlo en Pailette - om daarmee de mythe te creëren dat ze van zigeuners afstamden. In hun voorstellingen speelde steevast het paard de hoofdrol. In 1985 werd de naam van het paardencircus gewijzigd in "Zingaro", vernoemd naar het lievelingspaard van Bartabas; een Fries paard die hij zelden of nooit zelf in de show bereden heeft. Zingaro stal de show zelf. Twee jaar later viel de groep uiteen, en kwam het circus in handen van Bartabas. De paardenrijschool van Bartabas (Académie du Spectacle Equestre) bevindt zich anno 2006 in Versailles. Door de jaren heen heeft Zingaro zo'n zeven shows geproduceerd. In 2000 kwam Bartabas met zijn show "Triptyk" naar Nederland voor optredens in de Westergasfabriek.Bartabas en zijn groep treden jaarlijks zo'n 160 tot 170 keer op. Bartabas is ook actief als acteur, schrijver en producer van films. (nl)
