Dedicó la mayor parte de su vida a conspirar contra la monarquía de Luis Felipe I de Francia para establecer una república democrática. Elegido diputado en la Asamblea Nacional de la Segunda República Francesa, fue condenado tras un intento fracasado de golpe de Estado en 1848. Tras su liberación en 1854, prefirió exiliarse a los Países Bajos donde pasó el resto de su vida. Junto con Auguste Blanqui, es considerado uno de los revolucionarios románticos más emblemáticos del siglo XIX francés. (es)

À la suite des événements du 12 mai 1839, journée d'insurrection durant laquelle les républicains de la Société des saisons tentent de renverser Louis-Philippe, il est condamné à la détention perpétuelle, puis libéré par la révolution de 1848. Le 15 mai 1848, lorsque des militants des clubs tentent d’imposer leur loi au gouvernement provisoire, il est incarcéré, avant d'être amnistié en 1854. Członek tajnych związków, m.in. Stowarzyszenia Pór Roku. W 1839 raz z Luisem Blanqui stanął na czele krwawo stłumionego powstania w Paryżu. Po jego stłumieniu skazany na karę śmierci; karę zamieniono mu na długoletnie więzienie w twierdzy Mont-Saint-Michel dzięki interwencji Victora Hugo. Opuścił twierdzę po amnestii w lutym 1848. Z Blanquim i jego utopijnym socjalizmem zerwał krótko po Wiośnie Ludów w 1848 i wycofał się z życia politycznego, dobrowolnie pozostając na wygnaniu. (pl)

- Armand Barbès (18 September 1809 – 26 June 1870) was a French Republican revolutionary and an opponent of the July monarchy (1830–1848). He is remembered as a man whose life centers on two days:
* 12 May 1839, the day of the uprising in which the Republicans tried to overthrow the king, Louis Philippe. His ill-considered actions on this day led to a sentence of life imprisonment; he was, however, released by the revolution of 1848; and
* 15 May 1848, the day when demonstrators invaded the Assemblée Nationale, where Barbès had been serving, for only about three weeks, as a deputy. The demonstrators' ostensible aim was to urge the government to exercise whatever influence it could in support of the liberation of Poland.
