- Adolf Overweg, född 24 juli 1822 i Hamburg, död 27 september 1852 i Maduari vid Tchadsjön, var en tysk upptäcktsresande. Overweg studerade naturvetenskap och anslöt sig 1849 tillsammans med Heinrich Barth till James Richardsons expedition från Tripolis genom Centralafrika till Sudan. Från i tog han sin särskilda väg över Maradi, Gober, Zinder och till , där han sammanträffande med Barth. Han företog betydelsefulla undersökningar i synnerhet vid och i båt på Tchadsjön. Resultaten publicerades i "Petermanns " och "Zeitschrift für Erdkunde". (sv)

As a member of a mission to fix trade routes in Central Africa he became the first person of European origin to circumnavigate Lake Chad by boat. Barth and Overweg were close friends. Barth wrote of Overweg's great talents as a scientist and observer, but his lack of discipline in keeping orderly notes, and his youthful disregard for his own safety doomed him to obscurity and an early death in the prime of his youth. Barth había escrito sobre la gran capacidad de Overweg como científico y observador, pero también habló de su falta de disciplina en redactar notas ordenadas y su desprecio por su propia seguridad, le condenaron a la oscuridad y una muerte temprana en la flor de su juventud. Com a membre d'una missió per fixar rutes comercials a l'Àfrica Central, va esdevenir la primera persona d'origen europeu en circumnavegar el Llac Txad. El 1849 va formar part d'una expedició sota el comandament de James Richardson, creada per deixar Trípoli a la primavera de 1850, per tal d'ajudar a forjar relacions del govern britànic amb els regnes de l'Àfrica Central. Van creuar el Sàhara, i es van dividir el 1851, amb Overweg obrint senders per la ruta de Zinder a Kukawa, i acabar reunint-se novament amb l'expedició del científic Heinrich Barth. Després de 18 mesos d'explorar l'Emirat d'Adamawa, el riu Benue, i finalment completar la seva gesta més notable en circumnavegar el llac Txad, va morir a Maduari, Txad. (ca)

- Adolf Overweg (24 July 1822 – 27 September 1852) was a German astronomer, geologist, and explorer of Africa. As a member of a mission to fix trade routes in Central Africa he became the first person of European origin to circumnavigate Lake Chad by boat. In 1849, he joined a three-man expedition under the command of James Richardson and Heinrich Barth. They set to leave Tripoli in the spring of 1850 to help the British government forge relations with central African kingdoms and explore unknown territory there. They crossed the Sahara carrying a boat on the backs of camels, splitting up in 1851 with Overweg trekking by route of Zinder to Kukawa. After 18 months of exploring the Adamawa Emirate, Benue River, and finally completing his most notable feat of circumnavigating Lake Chad, he died of an unknown illness in Maduari after swimming in cold waters. Barth and Overweg were close friends. Barth wrote of Overweg's great talents as a scientist and observer, but his lack of discipline in keeping orderly notes, and his youthful disregard for his own safety doomed him to obscurity and an early death in the prime of his youth.
