The Portuguese local elections of 1989 took place on 17 December. The elections consisted of three separate elections in the 305 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner is elected mayor, another election for the Municipal Assembly and a last one for the lower-level Parish Assembly, whose winner is elected parish president. This last was held separately in the more than 4,200 parishes around the country. Turnout in these elections was lower compared with 4 years ago, as 60.9% of the electorate cast a ballot.

  • As eleições autárquicas portuguesas de 1989 foram realizadas a 17 de Dezembro e, serviram para eleger os membros dos órgãos do poder local, compostos por 305 presidentes de Câmara, 1997 vereadores, 6753 mandatos paras as Assembleias Municipais e, cerca de 30000 mandatos para as Assembleias de Freguesia. O grande vencedor das eleições foi o Partido Socialista que conquistou 37 câmaras em relação a 1985, ficando com 116 câmaras municipais e tornando-se o maior partido autárquico. O Partido Social Democrata, por outro lado, foi o grande derrotado perdendo 36 câmaras, ficando-se apenas com 113. (pt)
