August 1893 zur Abstimmung gelangte und von Volk und Ständen angenommen wurde. Sie war von den Tierschutzvereinen in den Kantonen Bern und Aargau lanciert worden und hatte zum Ziel, das von Juden praktizierte Schächten zu verbieten. Es war die erste Volksinitiative auf Teiländerung der Bundesverfassung, die seit deren Einführung 1891 zur Abstimmung gelangte. Die Debatte über die Vorlage war (laut späteren Einschätzungen) zum Teil auch durch antisemitische Darstellungen geprägt. (de)

Il s'agit de la première initiative populaire acceptée par le peuple depuis la création de cette possibilité en 1891, mais aussi la seule disposition constitutionnelle sur la protection des animaux en Suisse jusqu'en 1973.
