The Ford Rhein (type G398TS) is a truck model that Ford Germany manufactured together with its smaller sister model Ford Ruhr between 1948 and 1955. The new truck came as the successor to the Ford V8-51 and offered only a few changes to it such as larger headlights. It had a V8 gasoline engine with 3924 cm³ displacement, which initially produced 90 PS (66 kW) and was increased by 5 PS to 95 PS (70 kW) from 1949. The engine power was passed on to the rear wheels via a four or five-speed gearbox. All-wheel drive was also available on request.

Der neue Wagen kam als Nachfolger des Ford V8-51 und bot ihm gegenüber nur wenige Änderungen, z. B. größere Scheinwerfer. Er hatte einen V8-Ottomotor mit 3924 cm³ Hubraum, der anfangs 90 PS (66 kW) leistete und ab 1949 um 5 PS auf 95 PS (70 kW) gesteigert wurde. Über ein Vier- oder Fünfganggetriebe wurde die Motorkraft an die Hinterräder weitergeleitet. Auf Wunsch war auch Allradantrieb erhältlich. Üblicherweise wurden die Lkw mit Ganzstahlführerhaus in Grau und mit Pritsche vom Werk ausgeliefert. Der Radstand betrug 4013 mm, die Nutzlast 3000 kg. Ab 1949 gab es aber auch zwei Niederflurfahrgestelle für Bus- und Sonderaufbauten mit verlängertem Radstand sowie Frontlenkerfahrgestelle mit im Heck eingebautem Motor. Drauz oder NWF bauten darauf Busse mit bis zu 25 Sitzplätzen und 33 Stehplätzen. Erwies sich der Einsatz von Ottomotoren anfangs als Vorteil, weil sie auch mit Holzgasvergaser ausgestattet werden konnten, um dem Benzinmangel zu begegnen, so konnten sich diese Modelle wegen des hohen Benzinverbrauchs später nur schwer gegen die Konkurrenten mit Dieselmotoren durchsetzen. Daher bot Ford ab Januar 1951 auch Sechszylinder-Viertakt-Dieselmotoren von Kämper oder mit 4080 cm³ Hubraum und 94 PS (69 kW) an. Die Motoren wurden bei Knorr in München in Lizenz für Ford gefertigt. Der Motor erwies sich allerdings als sehr anfällig und wurde daher bald in seiner Leistung auf 85 PS (62,5 kW) reduziert, allerdings mit geringem Erfolg: Seine Zuverlässigkeit nahm kaum zu. Die Nachfolger, die FK 2500 bis FK 4500, waren mit Zweitakt-Dieselmotoren ausgestattet. (de)

The trucks were usually delivered from the factory with an all-steel driver's cab in gray and a flatbed. The wheelbase was 4013 mm, the payload 3000 kg. From 1949, however, there were also two low-floor chassis for buses and special bodies with an extended wheelbase and front-link chassis with an engine built into the rear. Drauz or NWF built buses with up to 25 seats and 33 standing places on it. While the use of gasoline engines initially proved to be an advantage, because they could also be equipped with wood gas gasifiers to counter the petrol shortage, these models later found it difficult to prevail against competitors with diesel engines due to their high petrol consumption. Therefore, from January 1951, Ford also offered six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines from Kämper or Hercules with a displacement of 4080 cm³ and 94 hp (69 kW). The engines were manufactured under license for Ford by Knorr in Munich.
