Sein Vorgängerwahlkreis war der Bundestagswahlkreis Suhl – Schmalkalden-Meiningen – Hildburghausen, der zur Bundestagswahl 2017 um den Landkreis Sonneberg vergrößert wurde. Der Landkreis Sonneberg gehörte zuvor zum Bundestagswahlkreis Sonneberg – Saalfeld-Rudolstadt – Saale-Orla-Kreis. Die Änderung der Wahlkreiseinteilung in Thüringen wurde dadurch erforderlich, dass Thüringen zur Bundestagswahl 2017 einen Wahlkreis verlor. (de)
