D. à l'université Brown, sous la direction de George W. Whitehead. Son article le plus cité est de loin celui sur les algèbres de Hopf, écrit avec John Milnor. Comme professeur à Princeton, il a dirigé plus de vingt thèses et a de nombreux « descendants académiques ». En 1983, une conférence sur la K-théorie a eu lieu à Princeton, en l'honneur de son 60e anniversaire. En 2012, il est devenu membre de l'American Mathematical Society. (fr)

Moore machte 1948 seinen Bachelor-Abschluss am Massachusetts Institute of Technology und wurde 1952 an der Brown University bei George W. Whitehead promoviert (Some Applications of Homology Theory to Homotopy Problems). Er war Professor an der Princeton University (ab 1953 als Fine Instructor und ab 1955 als Assistant Professor, später mit voller Professur), an der er 1989 emeritiert wurde. Seu artigo mais citado versa sobre a álgebra de Hopf, em coautoria com John Milnor. Como membro da faculdade da Universidade de Princeton, orientou vinte e quatro estudantes, sendo o ancestral acadêmico de 945 matemáticos.
