| - The 1996–97 Heineken Cup was the second edition of the Heineken Cup, an international competition for the top European rugby union clubs. Competing teams from France, Ireland, Italy, Wales and, for the first time, England and Scotland, were divided into four pools of five, with each team playing the other teams once, meaning two home and two away games per team. The pool winners and runners-up qualified for the knock-out stages. The competition was won by a French team for the second time, when Brive beat their English opponents Leicester Tigers 28–9 at the Cardiff Arms Park. The defending champions Toulouse were knocked out in the semi-final by Leicester Tigers and Brive beat Cardiff in the other semi-final. (en)
- Der Heineken Cup 1996/97 war die zweite Ausgabe des Heineken Cup (Vorläufer des European Rugby Champions Cup), dem wichtigsten europäischen Pokalwettbewerb im Rugby Union. Beteiligt waren 20 Mannschaften aus sechs Ländern, wobei England und Schottland erstmals vertreten waren und Mannschaften aus Rumänien wegen des zu tiefen Leistungsniveaus nicht mehr eingeladen wurden. Das Finale fand am 25. Januar 1997 im Cardiff Arms Park statt. Pokalsieger wurde der französische Verein CA Brive, der im Endspiel die Leicester Tigers aus England schlug. (de)

- La Coupe d'Europe de rugby 1996-1997 réunit des participants irlandais, italiens, gallois, français et pour la première fois des clubs écossais et anglais. De ce fait, le petit poucet de la première édition, le club roumain champion de la divizia A, disparaît de la compétition et participe au Challenge européen dont c'est la première édition. La phase finale présente cette année un échelon de plus avec l'apparition des quarts de finale. Cette phase se poursuit entre les clubs qualifiés par élimination directe. (fr)
