A competição foi disputada entre os dias 3 de março e 8 de março, na cidade de Hartford, Connecticut, Estados Unidos. März 1981 im Civic Center der US-amerikanischen Stadt Hartford im Bundesstaat Connecticut statt. Das Punktesystem wurde geändert. Das Pflichtprogramm verlor in den Einzelwettbewerben an Bedeutung und machte nur noch 30 % der Gesamtwertung aus. Das Kurzprogramm kam mit 20 % in die Wertung und die Kür mit 50 %. Die Platzierung in jeder Kategorie wurde mit dem entsprechenden Faktor multipliziert und die drei Resultate wurden zur Gesamtpunktzahl hinzugefügt. Die Faktoren waren 0,6 für das Pflichtprogramm, 0,4 für das Kurzprogramm und 1,0 für die Kür. Den Rang in den einzelnen Wettbewerben legten die Punktrichtern nach dem 6,0-Punktesystem fest. Im Paarwettbewerb hatte das Kurzprogramm den Faktor 0,4 und die Kür den Faktor 1,0.
